About Us – The Family Opticians

Established in 1985 by Dispensing Optician John Pike and his Optometrist wife, Catherine, Pike Opticians is a fully-independent, private optical practice that has provided eyecare to the people of Shirley and Solihull for over 40 years. In 2013 John and Catherine’s son, Jonathan, joined the business, qualifying as a Dispensing Optician in 2017. Since then, the practice has moved to larger premises and is equipped with some of the most comprehensive clinical instrumentation available. Catherine retired in 2025 and is succeeded by Carolann Flanagan, an Optometrist with over 20 years experience in independent practice.

Our independence has many advantages. Our appointments are structured to maximise time with each individual patient, allowing for a thorough, unhurried eye examination. We’re free to order optical products from a myriad of suppliers, enabling us to constantly update our range of frames and lenses. Most importantly of all, being independent means that we get to know our clients personally. We learn their optical history, the style of frame which suits them best and even how their children are getting on at school!
